1.3 million women and 835,000 men are victims of domestic abuse. In the US alone, domestic violence accounts for the leading cause of violence against women.
There is only one way to deal with domestic abuse – and that is to escape and reinvent yourself. Here’s how you can move on from an abusive relationship and grow into the happy person you were meant to be.
Recognize the Abuse
Domestic abuse isn’t just physical assault or rape. It can take place in various forms; it could be verbal, emotional and mental, too.
It’s important to look for signs that are unsettling. More importantly, it is necessary to look out for behavior that makes you feel unsafe or poses a threat to you.
Speak About It and Seek Help Immediately
Dealing with domestic abuse can be done in various ways. When you are ready, it’s best to confide into a loved one or a friend.
In some cases, it’s best to report to legal authorities like the police, doctors and even counselors or lawyers.
Protect Yourself
If need be, take steps to protect yourself from your abuser. Move out of the shared property and stay with someone you can trust and feel safe with.
If your abuser is especially dangerous, seek legal counsel on procuring a restraining order.
Know It’s Going to Be Okay
Moving on from an abusive relationship is not easy; however, believe that it will pass and you will soon have a thriving life. Surround yourself with support and love and nourish your emotional self.
