There are so many incidents about women losing their lives to domestic violence or requiring intense medical aid after an abusive incident with a stranger that it has become imminent that women should learn self defense tactics.

So what are the 5 things all women must know about self defense?

Focus On Vulnerable Areas

Aim for the weak spots to stun your attacker. Aiming for joints can be tough or may require a certain level of fitness, but the following areas have maximum impact:

Eyes

Nose

Groin

Throat

Make Noise

No matter where you might be, another way to stun your attacker is by using your voice. Shout for help and try to get the attention of a nearby bystander.

Improvise

Anything can become a weapon. If you’re walking alone in a particularly shady area, stick your car or home keys out from your fist. If you’re carrying groceries, any glass object can also serve as a weapon of defense and cause enough impact for you to run away.

Share Your Location

Share your location through a messaging application with a trusted friend. Inform them of your destination and the estimated time it should take to reach there. With someone keeping tabs on where you are, you’re safer.

Be Wary of Your Surroundings

Be watchful of your surroundings and strangers. If you’re alone, it’s best to keep your headphones away and be observant. Chart your surroundings for an easy escape route in case you need to run. Watch out for tell tale signs like:

Distinct features – eye color, tattoos, clothes

Car registration plates

Weaknesses – a limp or other gait issues
